when I read the script it struck me as an interesting perspective on gender. i could definitely identify with the characters. this is a topic that is very underrepresented in the media, especially in film. i hadn't seen a story from this angle before and wanted to be a part of telling it.

"Boysenberry Night" is a manifestation of my inner world as a young queer person, growing up in theater, watching films like Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo and Juliet," and discovering my ever-evolving artistic voice and gender identity. I longed to express my inner duality of masculine and feminine, to be cast as Romeo rather than Juliet, charging on stage in heavy chainmail and hair slicked back. I know for many in the queer community, it all begins in a high school theater green room, where costumes and makeup present either a palette with which to paint ourselves anew, or a box to fit inside, a reminder of discomfort within our uncertain bodies. This space can be affirming, an opportunity for gender fluidity and self-discovery. It can also be a reminder that others do not perceive us as we would wish, leaving us in dysmorphia.
What I needed as a young actor trapped in a white dress, and a need I saw in the eyes of my friends or crushes, was space for these desires, these hidden facets of us that were dying to be seen, and to dance around in beautiful fabric that we chose, as boys or girls or something else. We all need someone to tell us that what we are is okay, that they are scared too, and let's be in it together.
This film is an offering to queer kids out there like us. My greatest wish is that you can grow up with the space I needed to just be and evolve and wear whatever the fuck you want, and be so loved for it.
all the love ---Sophie
